The
LSU Student Senate is divided into six
standing committees, which perform most of
the specialized focus work of the Senate.
Each committee specializes in one of the six
key areas of Student Government and student
life, and each Senator is appointed to only
one standing committee. Committees serve as
a filter system for legislation and are the
first step for bill approval and enactment.
In committee, Senators discuss a bill for
the first time and have the option to amend
it, report it favorably to the full Senate,
or to defer (kill) it. The six standing
committees of the Student Senate are listed
below.
Committee on
Academics, Athletics, and Administration
(AAA)
The Committee on Academics, Athletics, and
Administration deals mostly with affairs and
campus issues relating to the LSU-Baton
Rouge administration. Most of the academic
and athletic issues that the Student Senate
considers are linked to a member or
department of the LSU administration.
The AAA Committee meets at 7:30pm on Tuesday
nights in the Council Room of the Union.
Committee on
Finance (FIN)
The Committee on Finance is one of the two
internally-focused Student Senate
committees. The Finance Committee considers
the Student Government Budget every year and
any amendments thereto. It is also
responsible for the external appropriations
of Student Government, including monetary
grants to student organizations for
initiatives and trips. Some of the minor
functions of the Finance Committee are to
deal with salaries of Student Government
members, revenue projections, records
management, and general fiscal affairs.
The FIN Committee meets at 6:30pm on Tuesday
nights in the Caddo Room of the Union.
Committee on
Governmental Relations (GR)
The Committee on Governmental Relations has
the widest jurisdiction of the six standing
committees, and is both centrally-focused
and externally-focused. Primarily, the
Governmental Relations Committee deals with
any communication, petition, relation, or
action from Student Government and the LSU
Student Body to governing entities on the
local, state, and federal levels as well as
student bodies and student governments of
other institutions of higher education.
Secondary duties include the public
relations of Student Government, College
Council affairs considered by the Senate,
student groups and organizations,
entertainment events and organizations, and
Free Speech Plaza.
The GR Committee meets at 7:30pm on Monday
nights in the International Room of the
Union.
Committee on
Housing, Infrastructure, and Technology (HIT)
The Committee on Housing, Infrastructure,
and Technology has a very wide jurisdiction
and encompasses a large sector of student
life. This committee handles issues relating
to all university housing, Greek housing,
buildings, structures, roads, etc. on campus
and immediately adjacent thereto, as well as
all technology on campus, including the
Student Tech Fee.
The HIT Committee meets at 6:30pm on Monday
nights in the Acadian Room of the Union.
Committee on Rules
(RUL)
The Rules Committee is the second of the two
centrally-focused committees, dealing with
the rules, procedures, and employees of
Student Government. Every year, the Rules
Committee holds confirmation hearings for
each person appointed to a position in
Student Government. Rules also considers any
amendments to the Constitution, Bylaws,
Senate Rules of Order, and Election Code.
The RUL Committee meets at 8:30pm on
Tuesdays in the Senate Conference Room.
Committee on
Students' Rights and Welfare (SRW)
The Committee on Students' Rights and
Welfare considers matters directly related
to students and their tenure at LSU. This
committee usually sees issues concerning
auxiliary services, like Chartwells and the
LSU Union, the Student Code of Conduct,
Student Bill of Rights, disciplinary
regulations and sanctions, and traffic
issues.
The SRW Committee meets at 8:30pm on Monday
nights in the Barataria Room of the Union.
